Match Report - 29 Aug 2010, Bracknell Town Ladies FC Bracknell Town Ladies beat Wycombe Wanderers LFC

The Robins welcomed Wycombe Wanderers to Larges Lane for their 3rd league game in the space of 8 days. Wycombe always pose problems for the Robins and this game was no exception. They harassed the Robins players into making mistakes when in possession which lead to a disjointed game during the first half.

With the breeze and then a strong wind accompanied by heavy rain, the Robins gradually took control of the game for the last 20 minutes of the half. They had the scent of success with passes into the spaces behind the high defensive line adopted by Wycombe. A combination of the weather conditions and the quality of the final ball marginally lacking, resulted in frustration for the Robins strikers and wide playmakers, the ball often running through to the Wycombe keeper or rolling out of play.

Wycombe posed little by way of attacking threat save for the odd long ball being chased down aggressively looking for Robins defenders to make mistakes. The Robins back 4 plus young Kirsty Robertson on the Town goal coped competently with each attacking phase. Powell was showing why she has now broken into the first team with a strong defensive midfield display, frequently winning the ball back and initiating Robins attacks. Emma Constable kept up the pressure with some very astute passes which with the conditions were not capitalised on.

The second half saw the sun come out for a while and the wind dropping a touch. Again the Robins tried without success to get the right quality consistently applied to the final ball adding to the frustration of the Robins. However, persistence and hard work paid dividends when a Wycombe defender misjudged a pass to a team mate which went across the face of the penalty area and Tracy Corkett pounced on the loose ball to finish well.

Wycombe continued to work hard and deny their opponents space and time to settle. As the game moved into the final 20 minutes, Wycombe became more reliant on longer passes hoping to get in behind the Robins back 4. Robertson dealt well with all situations and demonstrated her improvement having stepped up to first team duties this season. Wycombe's best moment came when they forced 3 successive corners but the Robins held firm to secure the 3 points.

There was an improvement in the work rate during this game when compared to last Thursday's performance which must have pleased manager Dave Ward. Next week sees the visit of newly promoted University of Portsmouth to Larges Lane, 2 pm ko.
